Who needs to drop some weight?
That's a hard question to answer completely since there are many factors that contribute to our decision to adopt a weight-loss program. You might want to do something about "those last ten pounds," you may need to seriously consider losing weight for health reasons or you may fall somewhere in between.

From a medical perspective, there are actually individuals who need to lose weight for health reasons. The combination of certain risk factors and excess weight (20% or more overweight) can put one at serious risk for certain diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, sleep apnea, gout and gall bladder disease. Weight loss in this case can provide significant health benefits. We'll refer to these risk factors later in the lesson, so peruse them now and think about yourself or members of your family who may have one or more of them.
