Lesson 2 - The Insulin Pump

That is an excellent question, but difficult to answer immediately. Who's to know? Will it match your shoes and your purse? Will it give you unsightly bulges in strategic areas of your wardrobe?

Since the pump acts as a replacement for the periodic insulin injections that are most associated with type 1 diabetics, it is no surprise that these patients make up the majority of pump users.

However, some type 2 diabetics with advanced conditions may also require daily injections of insulin, and may be able to use the pump as well.

Insulin pumps are only recommended for those diabetics who are willing to accept the added responsibility of learning the ins-and-outs of the machine and its functions, and who are willing to closely monitor their blood glucose levels (This will be discussed in further detail later in the next section about benefits and drawbacks).

Most important, if you have any questions or special concerns to address, be sure to discuss options and possible drawbacks of using an insulin pump with your physician.
